Published: Pioneer Press Palatine Countryside on Thursday, July 13, 2006 Marriage Amendment Stinks The Federal Marriage Amendment is nothing more than an attempt to write discrimination into our constitution. Discrimination is defined as “the action of discriminating against people” and “recognition of the difference between one thing and another”. Consequently, those who are in favor of such an amendment want to keep marriage “for them” and deny it to others simply because the “others” (gays) are different. The purported justification is because if “they” (gays) are allowed to marry – then polygamy and bestiality will be next. Utilizing the same type of logic, if marriage is denied to same sex couples – simply because of who they are or what they believe, then it would be logical to assume that marriage would next be denied to those who do not believe in the Bible. All marriages between those who are Muslim, Buddhist, and Hindu would become null and void. Why not deny marriage to people of color or physically challenged or who do not have college degrees simply because they are “different” as well? For those who justify the Federal Marriage Amendment as a means to protect families and children, then should childless couples be allowed to remain married? Are they a family? Our country was founded on protecting rights and freedom of religion (beliefs). Our constitution is based upon guaranteeing rights among all people as we are all created equal. To deny same-sex couples the right to marry denies them the right to be treated equally. The proposed Federal Marriage Amendment along with all state laws denying same-sex marriage is discriminatory and contrary to the reasons our forefathers fought for this country. I say “NO” to discrimination and “YES” to Equal Marriage. Deb Hale |
